Desiccants - MIL-D-3464E
A desiccant is a substance used to absorb and retain moisture within a sealed shipping container. Desiccants are used in rigid containers (such as a wooden crate or plastic box) and also in flexible containers (such as a barrier bag or envelope).

The 2 major type of desiccant used in shipping applications are clay and silica gel. Individual packet sizes are indicated in "units". A unit of desiccant is approximately 1 ounce.

We can supply desiccant in accordance with Mil-D-3464E in either Type I (general purpose - Kraft pouch) or Type II (non-dusting - Tyvek pouch).

Available in these unit sizes and quantities:

  • 1/6 unit - 1200 pcs. per 5 gallon pail

  • 1/3 unit - 700 pcs. per 5 gallon pail

  • 1/2 unit - 550 pcs. per 5 gallon pail

  • 1 unit - 1300 pcs. per 30 gallon drum

  • 1 unit - 300 pcs. per 5 gallon pail

  • 2 units - 800 pcs. per 30 gallon drum

  • 2 units - 150 pcs. per 5 gallon pail

  • 4 units - 500 pcs. per 30 gallon drum

  • 8 units - 300 pcs. per 30 gallon drum

  • 16 units - 150 pcs. per 30 gallon drum

  • 80 units - 30 pcs. per 30 gallon drum

How much Desiccant do I need?

Here are 2 simple formulas to determine the amount of desiccant needed, based on the container type:

  • Rigid Container (wooden crate, plastic box, etc.)
Use 1.2 units of desiccant per cubic foot

  • Flexible Container (barrier bags, envelopes, etc.)
Use 1.6 units per square foot of barrier material (include square footage for both sides of bag or pouch when calculating)

Humidity Indicator Cards
Humidity indicator cards are used to determine the percentage of humidity present in a sealed shipping container. They are often used in conjunction with desiccant.

We can supply humidity indicator cards conforming to MS20003-2 (3 spot - 30%, 40%, 50% humidity, 125 cards per can).
