Protecting your valuable
metal components from corrosion damage
is easily accomplished utilizing
Moisture Barrier Bags, Vapor Corrosion
Inhibitors, Desiccants or a combination
of several of these materials.
Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors (VCI's)
VCI's
work by aligning molecules on the
surface of the metal to a depth of
3 to 5 molecules. This layer of
molecules neutralizes the charged
surface and creates a barrier that
prevents oxidation. The Corrosion
Cell (the flow of electrons in the
metal and the flow of ions in the
electrolytic surface layer) is
unable to establish itself.
Therefore, corrosion is halted.
VCI’s
are specifically formulated for
different types of metals the main
categories are:
-
Ferrous products
-
Non-Ferrous Products
-
Mixed Metal Products
VCI’s
are available in either:
|
Paper
(bags, rolls, chips) |

Paper Rolls there are several
formulations available based on
metal type. Available in roll
widths of 36" and 48" and roll
lengths of 200 yards.

Moisture Barrier Bags
Specially constructed bags that
help prevent corrosion by reducing
the amount of ambient moisture
that can leech through
conventional poly bags. These bags
are made up of layers of materials
that have low MVTR's (Moisture
Vapor Transmission Rates) and can
be ordered to be heat sealable.

Desiccants & Humidity Indicator

Desiccants
A
desiccant is a substance used to
absorb and retain moisture within a
sealed shipping container.
Desiccants are used in rigid
containers (such as a wooden crate
or plastic box) and also in flexible
containers (such as a barrier bag or
envelope).
The 2
major types of desiccant used in
shipping applications are clay and
silica gel. Individual packet sizes
are indicated in "units". A unit of
desiccant is approximately 1 ounce. |
Desiccant is available in these unit
sizes and quantities:

How
much desiccant do I need?
Here are
2 simple formulas to determine the
amount of desiccant needed, based on
container type.
-
Rigid
Container (wooden crate,
plastic box, etc.)
Use 1.2 units of desiccant per cubic
foot.
-
Flexible Container (barrier
bags, envelopes, etc.)
Use 1.6 units of desiccant per square
foot of barrier material (include
square footage for both sides of bag
or pouch when calculating).
Humidity Indicator Cards
Humidity Indicator Cards are used
to determine the percentage of
humidity present in a sealed
shipping container. They are often
used in conjunction with
desiccant.
Humidity indicator cards are
available in these types and
quantities:
